It was past midnight, and therefore it was May 11, 1938. After a period in command of the 1st Military Region, when he faced the Communist Intent, General Eurico Gaspar Dutra had taken over the Ministry of War . He was not a man for sleeping late, but that night there had been a small celebration among friends at the Minister of Justice's house; they popped some champagne, talked a bit, and only now, in pajamas, the future president was getting ready for bed. It didn't. It was late, but the phone rang. On the other side, exasperated, the head of the Civil Police, Filinto Müller, spoke. There was a new attempt at revolution in the streets. This time, much worse. The Guanabara Palace, the official residence of the President of the Republic and his family, was under fierce attack. There was machine gun fire. if reinforcements If they did not arrive as soon as possible, Getúlio could be captured. Maybe even murdered.

The general wasted no time. He changed his pajamas for his uniform and, as quickly as he could, he went out into the street. No more than two hundred meters separated his apartment from Forte do Leme, located at one end of Copacabana. With a hurried step, Dutra went there and, on the way, caught his attention a group of ten or twelve men who, noisily, accumulated in Bar Alpino, the large German tavern that served the best draft beer in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro.
